Virtual technology is a method which creates a digital copy of an event or device, such as an online game or trade event. The term virtual is used in order to differentiate the replica from the original, however, it is not less real. Virtual machines (VM) are software-based emulators of physical hardware, like a server or desktop computer. These devices do not need to be physically removed from the premises and can be accessible in the same way as physical equipment is in different locations.
The emergence of VR has created new opportunities for tourism development and opened an era of research and development on the experience economy. VR research isn’t fully integrated into the literature on tourism. This article seeks to fill this gap by examining the literature related to VR/AR/MR for tourism and hospitality.
Using the SCOPUS database The study was based on the SCOPUS database. 80 studies were selected and their features and trends were examined. Since the year 2018, the number of VR/AR/MR research papers in higher education has increased rapidly. This is due to the cost of the devices. It is also evident that VR/AR/MR applications are primarily targeted at undergraduates, with engineering, science and medicine as the primary research subjects. Research in humanities and social sciences topics like art and history is still comparatively rare.
VR/AR/MR has the potential to improve students’ knowledge abilities, skills and confidence learning. It can also be used to enhance medical training and cultivate empathy for patients. For example immersive VR could help medical students develop empathy for elderly patients with aging-related diseases, and also enable them to test their skills in assessing patients with dyspnea.
