At Leo’s, we know first-hand how life changes after the loss of a pregnancy or baby. Our Peer Support Mentors use both their lived experience of loss and their professional training to walk alongside families during this deeply uncertain time.
Our baby loss service is available for families up until what would have been their baby’s second birthday. Support focuses on the emotional and mental health needs of the whole family throughout the perinatal period.
Why Peer Support Matters
Many families tell us they have carried their grief silently, waiting for someone to ask, “Would you like to share your story?” Our mentors create that invitation. Whether in a support session or a chance meeting in the community, we hold space for every parent, every baby, and every story with compassion, respect, and care.
At Leo’s, parents are always at the centre of their support. You are worthy of being heard, of being cared for, and of receiving the support you need as you navigate life after loss.
How Support Begins
- Families can be referred into our service by healthcare professionals, or parents can reach out directly.
- An initial assessment is carried out in the way that feels most comfortable to the parent(s): by phone, video call, or in person.
- Together, we explore what support will be most helpful. If peer support is the best fit, a lived-experience mentor will be matched with the family to build a supportive relationship.
- If wider trauma-focused help is needed, with consent, we can refer families to our counselling team — always with safe practice at the forefront of what we do.
What does support look like
Our peer support is flexible and personal to each family. Sessions can take place at home, in the community, over the phone, or online. Every parent’s experience is unique, and so is their support.
Emotional Support
Space to share openly about grief, anxiety, trauma, and the many outside factors that influence recovery, including social, cultural, and religious needs.
Practical Support & Advocacy
We can liaise with housing, employment, and education services, bridging gaps when extra support is needed.
Working Together with Professionals
We regularly communicate with healthcare teams, GPs, and consultants to ensure joined-up support, while always respecting confidentiality.

Being Present in the Community
Our mentors are a visible presence across Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland — in hospitals, neonatal and maternity services, and within family hubs. We are also building connections with funeral homes, community spaces, local cafés, libraries, and other services, so that more families know we are here when they need us.
